Having watched a few ships as they were being destroyed, I'm about 75% (not enough data) sure that an outer quarter needs to be completely destroyed before the center takes any damage, so it's not like a narrow hole can be blasted through an outer quarter and then exploited to damage the center. You can also put armour in the middle as a kind of firewall between systems, or layered, as space allows.Ī ship that is in nearly perfect shape but loses it's center is destroyed completely, so protect your center. As you take damage you can see the components change from green, to yellow, to red, and then disappear as they are destroyed completely. You can actually watch how your components get damaged in combat by selecting your ship then holding down tab (this works for enemy ships too), which brings up a scaled version of your ship design (as if you're looking at it in the ship design screen). I'm fairly certain that it has to be around the entire edge which is part of the design challenge. When placing armor, do you have to have it around all the edges? Or is a single chunk placed in a section enough to tell the game you have that armor there? I have been wondering this since the first game, and I am still not sure.
